Detail-Driven Design: Custom Storage Solutions
Custom organization feels best when it starts with listening.
That is the foundation of Diane Pemberton-Smith’s process at Closet Factory. She begins by learning how a client lives, what needs to be stored, and what is not working right now. She then designs around the realities of the home itself, since architecture guides the final look. The result feels integrated, not added on.
Diane brings a strong design background to each project. She holds a bachelor’s degree in design art, with study that also included architectural concepts. She has worked alongside designers and architects, and that experience shows up in the details. Clients who are highly detail-oriented tend to appreciate her approach, since she takes the time to dial in function first, then refine style and finishes so everything feels cohesive.
Two recent projects highlight how that process comes to life.
The first is an office wall in a waterfront St. Petersburg home. The homeowners wanted storage, but also wanted the wall to look seamless on camera for online meetings. Diane designed a full-height cabinetry solution which created a clean built-in statement from wall to wall and floor to ceiling, then crown molding finished the top edge for a tailored look that aligned with the home’s modern coastal feel.
Storage details did the heavy lifting. Base cabinets included drawers for supplies and documents, and soft-close, undermount slides kept everything moving smoothly and quietly. Upper cabinets mixed open shelving with closed storage behind doors, which helped the wall feel styled and streamlined at the same time. Lift-up doors on the top section added another layer of function, since they open up and out of the way, keeping access easy even in a tight footprint.
The windows introduced a challenge that many homeowners recognize right away. Custom sizing made it possible to build around the windows instead of stopping short, so every inch of the wall worked harder and the finished look stayed cohesive, centered, and intentional.
A second project delivered a true closet transformation. The clients wanted a space that honored what they own and made getting ready feel easier, which meant Diane’s design process began with a real inventory-based approach. She then mapped zones for shoes, hanging space, drawers, and display.
The finished design features Mission Shaker doors, crown molding, and inset glass at the top to highlight select accessories with lighting. Matte black round rods and coordinating accents bring contrast and a modern edge. The space also includes a sleek, ultra-thin, European-inspired engineered composite countertop that offers the look of stone without the maintenance, since it resists scratches, moisture, heat, and impact without requiring sealing.
In the end, these two spaces tell the same story in different ways. Diane’s designs transformed the office wall with a unique window layout into a polished feature wall that supports modern work life, and the closet revamped a daily routine into something calmer, clearer, and more enjoyable. Both projects began with real organizational needs, then came together through intentional design choices that respected the style of each home.
That is the Closet Factory difference. Custom solutions that maximize every inch, thoughtful guidance that keeps decisions feeling easy, and craftsmanship that makes the finished result look like it has always belonged.
