A Quiet Hurricane Season? It Only Takes One

It’s that time of the year again, hurricane season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. On average, close to 12 named storms form, with six of them becoming hurricanes. Of those six, three usually become major hurricanes with winds greater than 111 mph.
Most forecasters are expecting another quiet season with fewer than normal storms. In my opinion, long range hurricane forecasts are a complete waste of time. Back in 1992, it was a quiet season overall. The first storm of the season didn’t come until late August. It was Hurricane Andrew. I am guessing people in South Florida don’t remember 1992 as being a “quiet” season. Just remember, it only takes one.
There are many factors that come into play in determining whether or not the hurricane season will be active. Water temperature, dry air from Africa, and upper level wind changes are just a few of the things we look at in making a long range forecast. While it does seem likely the overall number of storms this season will be below normal, that certainly doesn’t mean it won’t happen. For our area, it’s just a matter of time.
It’s been 10 years since a major hurricane has hit the United States coast. That’s the longest stretch of its kind since the Civil War era. Even greater, it’s been 94 years since a major hurricane has hit the Bay Area. Some folks think our area is just less prone to hurricanes than other parts of Florida. You know what? They may be right. Still, that doesn’t mean we’re always going to be so lucky. That’s why preparation is the key.
Know your flood zones. Know the evacuation routes. Have a hurricane kit ready. These are things that should be done well before June 1st. You don’t want to be one of those 1,000 people in line at the local hardware store getting supplies as the storm is approaching.
With hurricanes, it’s all about the preparations. We see these storms coming. They’re huge. And while their path may change, you still have a pretty good idea days before if your area could be impacted. For your family’s sake, don’t wait till the last minute. I’ve chased too many storms and seen too many people helpless with nowhere to go once the roads are closed and the waters are beginning to rise.
