Building a Better Dock

Qualified and experienced in all phases of construction, both commercial and residential, Benjamin was drawn to focusing on building a better deck for his fellow Floridians after hearing about yet another deck collapse. He knew that with his work ethic, knowledge and skills, he could give homeowners in Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties security in knowing that the decks he built would be constructed to be safe and stand the test of time.
“The deck is a great entertainment space, and well used in this Florida weather,” said Benjamin. “You want to make certain that it’s as safe as possible, and that your friends and family won’t fall off the deck because the railing wasn’t properly secured, or that the deck collapses under the weight of your gathering because it wasn’t attached to the house as well as it could have been, or that the builder didn’t use a strong enough support system to hold the weight.”
Benjamin is not looking to be the biggest deck builder in the area, but the best. For this reason, he takes on just a couple of jobs at a time so that he can be hands-on for every phase of the construction. “I want to give my clients personal attention,” Benjamin states. “Putting up a new living space should fun and not worrisome. That’s why I am there to guide my customers all the way through, from the decision-making process and right through to the completion of their new deck.”
Greenway Construction can, and has, constructed decks from wood, but for longevity and ease of maintenance, top-grade composite decking such as Trex, Azek, and Wear Deck (which is manufactured right here in Florida), is the material of choice. Benjamin believes that adding features into the decks like LED lighting, speaker systems, and even water features can make the outdoor deck a fantastic entertaining space. “Once I have met with the homeowner and see what is involved as far as their ideas, colors, environment, and budget, then I can guide them to their best choices. I’ll come back with samples, detailed plans and a 3D rendering to make sure that we’re fulfilling their vision. I want the design and build process to be a positive customer-centered experience.”
One of the ways that he ensures having happy customers is by making certain that they get what they pay for. Greenway Construction will not cut any corners or take any short cuts in the deck construction or materials used. “There’s an old way to build decks, and then there’s a proper way to do it. If you don’t frame the deck the right way, then the money you spent on your
30-year warrantied decking is wasted when your pressure-treated frame rots out in a few years,” Benjamin stated. Techniques that they employ to extend the life of the framing include things that most other deck builders don’t do, such as ensuring proper drainage and using joist tape with hurricane-rated hanger systems. Their goal is to give their customers the fully intended usage that they have paid for when they purchased quality decking material, and to safely enjoy their better-built deck for
decades to come.
