In late spring, Carl Schultz’s air conditioning unit began to struggle against the rising temperatures. He found a contractor who suggested a Freon top-up without conducting any diagnostics after arriving two hours later than scheduled. The contractor made it clear that he could not guarantee or even specify how long the solution would prove useful: “They threw some Freon in and said that it could last a day, a week, a month or beyond,” Carl remembers.
